Position Description

LINC seeks an Agricultural Value Chain and Trade Systems Expert for a proposal to support an upcoming evaluation of an agricultural development initiative in Nigeria. The evaluation will examine baseline conditions across key livestock and aquaculture value chains, including production systems, input use, access to finance, trade facilitation, and market participation.

The consultant will provide subject matter expertise to ensure that the evaluation accurately captures the technical, market, and institutional dynamics shaping agricultural production and trade in Nigeria. The assignment is anticipated to take place throughout mid-2026.

This is a position contingent upon proposal award.

Responsibilities

The Agricultural Value Chain and Trade Systems Expert will provide technical input throughout the evaluation process to ensure that research tools, analysis, and findings reflect a strong understanding of Nigerian agricultural systems and trade dynamics. Responsibilities may include:

  • Provide technical input into the evaluation design and development of research instruments, particularly survey modules related to livestock and aquaculture production systems, input use, farm management practices, and market participation.
  • Advise on indicators and measurement approaches related to agricultural productivity, technology adoption, value chain performance, and trade outcomes.
  • Contribute to the design of key informant interviews and focus group discussions with producers, producer organizations, agribusinesses, financial institutions, and public-sector stakeholders.
  • Provide technical insights on livestock and aquaculture production systems in Nigeria, including productivity constraints, feed systems, animal health, and farm-level management practices.
  • Provide expertise on agricultural market systems, including linkages between producers, aggregators, processors, importers, and exporters.
  • Advise on trade-related dynamics affecting agricultural commodities, including import processes, logistics, non-tariff barriers, and regulatory considerations.
  • Provide guidance on access to finance and the role of financial institutions in supporting agricultural production and trade.
  • Support interpretation of findings and contribute to the development of actionable recommendations grounded in sector realities.

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Advanced degree in agricultural economics, agronomy, rural development, agricultural sciences, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in agricultural value chains, market systems development, or agricultural trade.
  • Demonstrated experience working in Nigeria, with strong familiarity with livestock and/or aquaculture systems.
  • Strong understanding of agricultural market systems, including production, aggregation, processing, and trade linkages.
  • Experience with trade-related issues affecting agricultural commodities, including logistics, regulatory frameworks, and non-tariff barriers.
  • Familiarity with agricultural finance, including access to credit and financial products for producers and agribusinesses.
  • Experience contributing to research, evaluations, or analytical studies in agriculture or rural development.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Fluency in English required.
